BV Series – Vertical External Pumps

Heavy-duty vertical pumps for corrosive and abrasive fluids

The TECNIUM BV Series Vertical External Tank Pumps are engineered for the safe and efficient handling of corrosive and abrasive liquids directly from outdoor storage tanks and open-air installations. Manufactured entirely from solid thermoplastic materials, these pumps offer outstanding resistance to aggressive chemicals and environmental exposure, ensuring continuous, maintenance-free operation.

BV Series vertical external pump — hydrodynamic sealing

Hydrodynamic sealing with no mechanical seal, compliant with ISO 5199

The Vertical BV Series is built to the ISO 5199 process pump standard, combining mechanical robustness with optimum hydraulic performance.

  • Hydrodynamic sealing system that eliminates the need for mechanical seals, ensuring leak-free operation
  • Dry-running design: enables the pump to operate safely even when the liquid level fluctuates or the suction line empties
  • Compact vertical configuration: ideal for direct installation on outdoor tanks, minimising footprint and piping requirements
  • Built in solid plastic with steel reinforcements for dimensional stability and vibration resistance
  • Optional ATEX-certified versions available for explosive atmospheres

FAQs about the external BV Series

The most common queries about vertical external pumps, hydrodynamic sealing and differences with other TECNIUM series.

What is hydrodynamic sealing and why does it eliminate the mechanical seal?

Hydrodynamic sealing uses an expeller mounted on the shaft that, as it rotates, generates centrifugal pressure that prevents the fluid from escaping upwards along the shaft. When the pump is stopped, no liquid is in contact with the seal area. The result: zero leakage during operation, with no mechanical seal to maintain or replace periodically. It is the preferred solution for fluids where the mechanical seal would be the weak point of the equipment.

What is the difference between the external BV and the submerged BT?

The BT is designed to be submerged in relatively deep wells, pits or sumps (up to 5.2 m) with a cantilever shaft. The external BV is installed on the cover of an outdoor tank, with the suction column inside the vessel and the motor on the outside. The BV handles greater flow rates (up to 1,200 m³/h) and is typically used in chemical tank farms with short suction piping and no need for a pumping pit.

What does "dry running" mean for this series?

It means the BV can operate during intervals without liquid in the suction column — for example, when the tank empties or the level drops below the suction bell — with no damage to bearings or the sealing system. This robustness prevents the catastrophic failures common in conventional pumps when accidentally run dry due to oversight or level fluctuation.

What column length can be specified?

The column is engineered to the customer’s tank dimensions. Standard configurations cover up to several metres, and for longer columns the design is reinforced with guides and auxiliary plastic bearings. TECNIUM sizes the column in each case according to the tank, fluid and flow rate, ensuring mechanical stability and minimum vibration.

Is it suitable for outdoor ATEX zones?

Yes. The BV Series is available in ATEX-certified versions according to Directive 2014/34/EU, with antistatic plastics where applicable, seal monitoring and proper earthing. This is the standard configuration in solvent tank farms, oxidising-acid storage and outdoor zones classified as 1, 2, 21 or 22.

Does it require mechanical seal maintenance like a standard pump?

No. Without a mechanical seal, the most common cause of scheduled maintenance and unplanned shutdowns of process pumps disappears. Maintenance is reduced to checking upper bearings, motor alignment and column condition. For 24/7 continuous service, this translates into a significantly lower operating cost across the equipment’s service life.
