High-End Adsorption: TECNIUM-K

Multilayer adsorption for odours and low-concentration trace compounds

In most cases, contaminants present in gases have very low perception thresholds (mercaptans, VOCs, H₂S, etc.) and certain materials make it possible to adsorb them and fix them onto their surface thanks to their high porosity and to the attraction of intermolecular forces.

The use of high-end filter media allows a broad spectrum of contaminants to be adsorbed, thanks to the combination of different adsorbent materials. The TEC-K material is composed of carbon and impregnated zeolites, and the T-AL/TC material consists of impregnated aluminas and a thermally activated adsorbent. This combination produces a dual action of adsorption together with initial oxidation and final alkaline neutralisation, delivering very high removal efficiencies.

They have the advantage of a greater adsorption capacity than traditional activated carbon, as well as a wider spectrum of contaminants that can be removed. They also allow operation with gases containing high moisture content.

Advantages over traditional activated carbon

Combining several adsorbent media in a single bed broadens the treatable spectrum, multiplies capacity and allows operation even with relative humidity close to saturation.

FAQs on TECNIUM-K adsorption

The most common queries on high-end filter media, comparison with traditional activated carbon and operation.

How does TECNIUM-K differ from traditional activated carbon?

Virgin activated carbon only works by physisorption and rapidly loses capacity with high humidity or with polar compounds. TECNIUM-K combines carbon with impregnated zeolites or aluminas that add chemisorption and surface oxidation-neutralisation reactions. The result is a higher retention capacity, a much broader contaminant spectrum and the ability to operate with humidity-saturated gases without losing efficiency.

What flow rates is this technology designed for?

TECNIUM-K is the best option for medium-to-low flows (from hundreds to a few thousand m³/h) or as a polishing stage after chemical/biological towers. For very high flows the adsorbent media investment may not be competitive against the chemical or biological route, unless regulations or workplace health demand very fine control of residual odour.

When should it be combined with biotrickling or the chemical route?

In installations with high peaks and highly detectable residual odours (for example, WWTPs close to residential areas), a biological or chemical tower removes most of the contaminant and a downstream TECNIUM-K bed “polishes” the final traces to undetectable values. This multi-barrier configuration is the most common in odour control projects with sensitive neighbours.

How long does the adsorbent medium last and how is replacement managed?

Service life depends on the contaminant mass load, humidity and the exact media composition. It is common to design for 12-36 months between replacements. Saturation is detected by an increase in outlet concentration (continuous probes) or by colorimetric indicators. Replacement is carried out by cartridges to minimise downtime, and spent media are managed as waste according to their classification.

Does it work with very humid gases or downstream of a scrubbing tower?

Yes. One of the key advantages of TECNIUM-K is its tolerance to relative humidity close to saturation (up to 95% RH at full efficiency). It is therefore the natural option downstream of scrubbing towers or biotrickling systems, where the gas exits saturated and conventional activated carbons would quickly lose useful capacity.

Which contaminants does TECNIUM-K remove most effectively?

With TEC-K (carbon + impregnated zeolites) high efficiency is achieved against H₂S, mercaptans (R-SH), amines (R-NH), ammonia and a wide range of VOCs. With T-AL/TC (impregnated aluminas) acidic compounds such as H₂S, SO₂ and HCl in low concentrations are addressed with a dual action of oxidation and alkaline neutralisation, ideal for residual odours.
