BKM Series – Magnetic Drive Plastic Pumps

Sealless magnetic drive · Zero leakage · Dry-running capability

Range of magnetic drive pumps engineered to enable dry-running operation and completely eliminate the mechanical seal. Flow rates up to 50 m³/h and heads up to 45 m, manufactured in high chemical-resistance thermoplastics for the most critical services.

BKM Series magnetic pump — sealless magnetic drive

Magnetic drive: absolute containment without mechanical seal

In the BKM Series, the motor drives an external magnet that transmits torque through a magnetic field to an internal magnet integral with the impeller. There is no shaft passing through the pump body and no dynamic seal, which translates into zero leakage to the outside and maximum safety for toxic, costly or hazardous products.

The magnetic system is engineered so that, during dry running, the impeller is positioned in a neutral position that avoids any friction. This allows extended dry-running operation without overheating.

The range is available in two main models according to the required level of chemical resistance: BKMC for standard services and BKMYS for the most demanding chemicals.

Why choose the BKM Series

Magnetic drive pumps are the mandatory choice when a leak through a mechanical seal is not acceptable: toxic, hazardous, expensive or high-purity products.

Protected dry-running operation

The magnetic system positions the impeller in a neutral position during dry running, avoiding friction and prolonged overheating.

Absolute containment

No mechanical seal, no leakage to the outside. The magnetic barrier ensures total containment of the pumped fluid.

No mechanical seal

The most common cause of failure and maintenance in conventional pumps — the mechanical seal and its periodic spares — disappears entirely.

Optional flange connections

DIN/ANSI flanges available as an option for seamless integration into the customer’s standard process lines.

ATEX versions

Certified configurations available according to Directive 2014/34/EU for explosive atmospheres with flammable solvents and chemicals.

Critical applications

HCl, HF, H₂SO₄, solvents, pharmaceutical products, toxic fluids and high-purity reagents.

FAQs about the BKM Series

The most common queries about magnetic drive pumps, the difference between BKMC and BKMYS models and when to choose this series over alternatives.

How does the magnetic coupling work?

The motor drives an external magnet; that magnet transmits torque to a second magnet integral with the impeller through a sealed wall (the internal plastic containment shell). There is no shaft passing to the outside, no mechanical seal and no possible leakage along the shaft. The inner wall acts as an absolute hermetic barrier between the fluid and the environment.

What is the difference between BKMC and BKMYS?

BKMC is built in PP with glass fibre reinforcement, with a ceramic shaft and a carbon bushing — it covers general chemical services such as dilute acids, alkalis, brines and most industrial chemicals. BKMYS is the higher-grade option: body in E-CTFE with carbon fibre, shaft in silicon carbide. It is the choice for oxidising products (nitric acid, concentrated hypochlorite), high temperatures and demanding chemistry such as HF, concentrated H₂SO₄ or specific solvents.

Can it really run dry without failing?

Yes, thanks to the specific design of the magnetic system: when the fluid is missing, the impeller shifts to a neutral position where there is no friction between the bushings and the containment shell. This allows dry-running for extended periods without overheating. It is a critical advantage over other magnetic pumps on the market that require the fluid to act as coolant for the internal bearings.

When should I choose BKM over a sealed pump?

Whenever occasional seal weep is not acceptable: toxic products (CO, phenols, chlorine dioxide), hazardous products (concentrated acids, flammable solvents), high-value chemicals (pharmaceutical products, pure reagents) or installations with strict emission regulations (VOCs, controlled atmospheres). Also when the maintenance cost of the seal (downtime, labour, spares) exceeds the initial additional investment.

What is the flow and head limit of this series?

The BKM Series covers flow rates up to 50 m³/h and heads up to 45 m. For higher flow rates with a zero-leakage requirement, TECNIUM offers special configurations or combinations of several units in parallel. For standard services with a conventional mechanical seal, the BH (motor pumps) or BN (process pumps) Series are recommended.

Is it compatible with ATEX atmospheres?

Yes. The BKM Series is available in ATEX-certified versions according to Directive 2014/34/EU for zones with explosive atmospheres. It is a common configuration in plants with flammable solvents and classified chemical processes, where the risk of sparks or overheating from a defective seal is already eliminated at source by the magnetic principle itself.
