Desalination water treatment plant solutions

Desalination plants are becoming increasingly important in the fight against drinking water shortages in certain areas and countries worldwide. With the escalating demand for water and the diminishing availability of freshwater sources, the capability to convert saltwater into consumable water has become a pressing necessity.

The present technology enables the production of water of exceptional quality through desalination procedures in specific plants. Tecnium can supply various products tailored to each plant corrosive conditions and specific needs.

What is the process of water desalination?

Desalination may seem straightforward at first glance – removing salt and other minerals from saltwater.

However, this is an oversimplification of a complex process that requires a sophisticated sequence of procedures vitally essential for producing quality drinking water.

These series of procedures can be divided into three main stages: pretreatment, desalination, and post-treatment.

1

  • Pretreatment: The first stage of the desalination process involves preparing the saltwater for the actual desalination process. Pretreatment is performed to remove suspended solids, algae, organic compounds, and biological impurities that could harm desalination membranes or reduce their efficiency.

These processes may include coagulation, flocculation, sedimentation, and filtration, each playing a unique role in preparing saltwater for desalination.

2

  • Desalination: The desalination stage is where the primary separation of salt and other minerals from water occurs. There are various desalination technologies, but the most commonly used is reverse osmosis (RO). In RO, saltwater is pressurized and forced through a semipermeable membrane.

The high pressure drives the water through the membrane, leaving behind salt and other minerals. It’s important to note that while this is the most common process, there are other desalination technologies, like multi-stage distillation and vapour compression evaporation, each with its advantages and challenges.

3

  • Post-treatment: The third and final stage of the desalination process involves improving and adjusting the desalinated water quality.

Post-treatment may include remineralization (to replace essential minerals removed during the desalination process), disinfection (to eliminate any remaining bacteria or viruses), and pH adjustment. Stabilization can also be used to prevent corrosion in the water pipes.
